Miami Beach, FL (March 30, 2021) – The westbound lanes of the MacArthur causeway were closed on Monday, March 29, due to a major accident. According to officials, the collision occurred between a three-wheeled Vanderhall Blackjack and four cyclists, sending one woman to the hospital with injuries.
The accident took place around 5:15 p.m. and Miami Beach Fire Rescue, Police, and paramedics were dispatched to the site of the wreck on the MacArthur Causeway near Terminal Isle. According to reports, four bicyclists were standing on the sidewalk with their bikes when, for currently unknown reasons, the Blackjack drove into the group.
One woman, who has not been identified at this time, suffered severe head trauma in the crash. She was treated on-site by paramedics before being transported via ambulance to Ryder Trauma Center. She is reportedly in critical condition.
Sources indicate that a second victim was seen at the scene with a bandaged knee. Traffic on the Causeway was backed up for approximately four hours after the accident occurred. Local motorists were urged to seek alternate travel routes while responders worked to clear the area.
Authorities continue to investigate the details of the incident.
Our thoughts are with everyone involved in this injury crash in Miami Beach. We hope for their full recovery.
Bicycle Accidents in Florida
Unfortunately, bicycle collisions in Florida happen frequently. The Sunshine State is well known for its theme parks, beaches, and year-round warm climate. These attractions and more draw millions of people here each year to enjoy everything our beautiful state has to offer. However, with more people, sadly, comes more traffic accidents. Florida’s pedestrian danger index is one of the highest in the United States, according to recent information provided by Smart Growth America. States and metropolitan areas throughout the country were ranked on how life-threatening it is for people to walk or ride bikes instead of drive. This information was based on the number of people who have been hit by cars and killed in the area. Florida ranks number one out of the twenty states that were examined. In 2019, from January to June, almost 400 people were killed due to Florida pedestrian crashes, a percentage of them bicyclists. These statistics prove that Florida is one of the most dangerous states for pedestrian/bicycle travel.
