Fort Pierce, FL (September 23, 2021) – A 10-year-old girl lost her life after she was hit by a vehicle on the morning of Thursday, September 23 in Fort Pierce. The driver fled the scene after the incident occurred, according to reports from authorities.
The girl, sources say, was attempting to get to a school bus on Thursday morning sometime between 6 and 6:30 a.m. Authorities found her unresponsive in a grassy area near the intersection of Skylark Drive and Oleander Drive at approximately 6:35 a.m.
Investigations by police reveal that the girl was walking across the intersection to get on the school bus when she was struck by a vehicle. The bus had its flashing lights on as well as its stop stick out at the time.
The driver was headed north through the intersection and struck the child before fleeing the scene, according to statements from authorities in the area. The young girl was transported to Lawnwood Regional Medical Center where she later lost her life.
Police say they’re actively looking for a white 4-door sedan with damage to its right front end. The investigation into the circumstances of the incident continues.
We would like to offer our sincere condolences to the family of the deceased victim at this time. Nothing further has been reported.
Fort Pierce Pedestrian Collisions
The Sunshine State is renowned for its beaches, theme parks, and year-round warm climate. These attractions and more attract millions of people here every year to enjoy all that our beautiful state has to offer. Sadly, due to the nearly constant warm weather, pedestrian collisions in Fort Pierce happen regularly.
With a higher volume of people, regrettably, comes more road accidents. Florida’s pedestrian danger index is one of the highest in the United States, according to data provided by Smart Growth America, a company that rates states and large metropolitan areas across the country on how dangerous it is for people to walk or ride bikes instead of drive.
This information was based on the number of pedestrians who have been involved in fatal car crashes. Florida ranks number one out of the twenty states that were studied. In 2019, from January to June, nearly 400 people were killed due to Florida pedestrian crashes, a percentage of them bicyclists. These statistics prove that Florida is one of the most dangerous states for pedestrian/bicycle travel.
Traffic accidents in Fort Pierce occur thousands of times per day, causing numerous injuries and taking the lives of thousands of people. According to statistics compiled concerning the daily accident rate in the Sunshine State, there are over 1,000 traffic collisions that occur in Florida per day. Yearly, the state sees more than 400,000 collisions take place. This is thousands more than any other state in the nation. This may be partially due to the high population, as well as the high tourism rate in Florida. More people, unfortunately, means more traffic accidents.
