Jacksonville, FL (September 26, 2021) – A woman was killed when her car went underneath a tractor-trailer on Saturday, September 25th in Jacksonville.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the accident occurred at about 3:00 a.m. when a 24-year-old woman was driving a black Toyota Corolla northbound on Duval Road. At that time, a white Freightliner tractor-trailer being operated by a 57-year-old male attempted to make a U-Turn, causing the trailer to block all lanes of travel.
The woman struck the trailer and her vehicle shot under it. The car then flew over the grass shoulder and crashed into a tree.
The driver died at the scene.
The truck operator was unharmed during the incident.
FHP is investigating the crash, and charges are pending.
We would like to offer our deepest condolences to the family of the deceased victim at this time.
Fatal Tractor-Trailer Accidents in Jacksonville
There are multiple kinds of accidents that involve tractor-trailers. One of the most dangerous is an under-riding accident.
Studies have shown that close to 50% of all fatal tractor-trailer accidents are caused by either under-riding or overriding.
Underride accidents happen when a car or truck crashes into an oversized commercial vehicle and the impact forces the smaller vehicle under the trailer. Since an average car is roughly 40 inches off the ground, and the lowest part of a truck’s trailer is around 45 inches above the ground, the cabin of a vehicle can easily fit underneath a trailer during a collision, causing critical injuries or even fatalities for those in the car. These accidents also commonly result in the roof of the car being compressed or even completely torn off.
It has been estimated that about 500 people are killed every year in underride accidents and over 5,000 people are injured.
