Palm Beach, FL (October 20, 2021) – A 9-year-old boy lost his life in a fatal car accident in Palm Beach on Friday, October 15 at around 6:20 p.m. Sources indicate that the crash occurred in the 30000 block of South County Road 880 when a 2008 Lexus driven by Steven Jarden Arriaza Mercado, 21, veered off of the road and rolled over the shoulder.
The Lexus was headed east on County Road 880 when, for reasons unknown, it went off of the right side of the road over a downward slope into the grassy shoulder where it began to roll. Both the driver and passenger, identified as the 9-year-old boy, were ejected from the car into the shoulder.
The driver was transported to St Mary’s hospital in stable condition, according to reports. Sources indicate that the vehicle crashed into the canal below the roadway, however, it was not totally submerged in the water.
It remains unclear whether the young boy lost his life at the scene or was first transported to an area hospital. An unidentified patient was transported to a trauma hospital via the Trauma Hawk, officials said.
No other information has been reported at this time. We would like to offer our sincere condolences to the family of the deceased victim at this time. Our thoughts are with everyone involved and injured in hopes of a full recovery.
Palm Beach Car Accidents
Travel by car is the most popular method of transportation throughout the United States. Motor vehicles have come a long way since their advent in 1886. Numerous safety measures are taken while building automobiles to ensure the continued well-being of their users. Though there have been countless precautions taken in order to improve and incorporate different safety features in motor vehicles over the years, there is, unfortunately, no way to guarantee the complete safety of those who drive/ride in them.
This is due to the fact that, when it comes to safety while driving/riding in a car, not only must we consider the soundness of the vehicle itself, we must also consider the soundness of the judgment of those who are driving around us. In Florida, the leading cause of motor vehicle accidents, currently, is distracted driving. Across the country, negligent driving accounts for almost all of the traffic accidents that take place, around 92%.
